Holyfield to Mayweather: You’re not ‘The Best Ever’
"He’s great, but he’s not ‘The Best Ever.’”
Boxing legend and former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield again shot down Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s contention that he is the TBE following his win over Andre Berto.
After his victory, Mayweather also announced his retirement and said he has nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing.
“Everyone has that opinion of himself and I don’t think there’s anything with having that opinion, but do I really think that about Mayweather? No, I don’t,” he told BoxingScene.com.
“I definitely think he’s a great fighter, I wouldn’t take that away from him, but you can’t say best ever until everything stops, each generation is supposed to get better,” he added.
He Never Fought Everybody
Going further, Holyfield explained that Mayweather—while definitely one of the greats—does not deserve the title of TBE due to the way he chooses his opponents.
“He will definitely go down as one of the great fighters in whatever weight division they choose to put him in,” he said. “He won the championship in a lot of divisions, but he never fought everybody.”
Earlier before the fight, Holyfield—a dominant cruiserweight who went on to become top dog in the heavyweight division—also called out the unbeaten Mayweather for picking his fights.
“Whatever the undisputed champion means is that you are the best if there are three belts and you’ve got all three belts, then it is undeniable that you are the best fighter in that weight division,” he said. “But if you choose to fight whoever you want to fight and you say ‘I’m going to waive this belt’, then it takes something away from the game of boxing.”
“He has never been an undisputed champion, but he claimed to be it,” he added.
