Kitchen Sponge Home to Millions of Bacteria
MANILA -- Did you know your kitchen sponge could do more harm than good, especially if you use it with a bar of soap? This is because sponges have been found to be easily contaminated with different kinds of disease-causing bacteria.
Liza Dasko, a mother, had no idea about this. Using her sponge with a bar of detergent, she washes her household's dishes, and later uses the same sponge for ensuring the rest of the house is clean, especially the kitchen area.
"Maselan po ako sa paghuhugas ng plato," she said. However, when her sponge was tested for bacteria under a microscope, she was shocked to find the number of bacteria thriving in it.
Microbiologist Dr. Windell Rivera explained, "Madaling ma-contaminate 'yung sponge, dadami rin 'yung mga mikrobyo 'dun."
Bacteria found in sponge are Salmonella, campylobacter, listeria, and e.coli. Rivera further said, "At sigurado tayo na 'yung cross-contamination ang mangyayari para sa iba pang gamit sa kusina."
These bacteria will then transfer to the food we eat, which might lead to contamination and diseases.
Some of us choose detergent bars in cleaning our dishes because it is cheaper. However, it is better to ensure the safety of our families from bacteria by using antibacterial dishwashing liquid, Rivera said.
"Makakatulong ang dishwashing liquid na mayroong antibacterial component para malinis ang mga gamit sa kusina," he said.
