BPI issues new warning vs 'phishing' emails
MANILA - The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has issued a warning to its Express Online (EOL) users against the re-emergence of "phishing" scams through email.
BPI said the emails are being sent to unsuspecting online users to trick them into revealing personal and financial information.
"Recently, some EOL users received an email that seemed to come from BPI Express Online. Clicking on the link directed users to a fake site that asked for several user information," the bank said in its advisory.
"Please be informed that this is a phishing scam and that BPI Express Online will never ask its users to log in to their online accounts through embedded links nor secure personal and/or banking information via unsolicited emails," it added.
BPI said it has already taken action but reminded its users to exercise caution in providing personal and financial information on suspicious sites and to check for signs of fraud.
The bank advised EOL users who may receive a suspicious e-mail to report it to the bank by sending a copy of the email to expressonline@bpi.com.ph.
On its website, BPI said to avoid phishing attacks, customers are advised to begin their online session manually by typing the web address of BPI into the browser.
The official URL of BPI Express Online is secure1.bpiexpressonline.com.
Customers are also advised to avoid disclosing personal or account details via email or embedded link and check the security certificate of the web page before entering personal or account information into a site.
"If you think you may have responded to a suspicious e-mail, change your password as soon as possible. To change your password, log in and go to Account Maintenance --> Change Password," BPI said.
In the first nine months of the year, BPI's net income grew 8.1 percent to P13.84 billion from P12.8 billion last year.
